Men of the African Pioneer Corps from Basutoland (now Lesotho) maintaining lorries, tanks and other vehicles in the Middle East.

Black African soldiers were treated as inferior to their white counterparts and were often recruited into unarmed labour units. Recruitment in the Crown Colony of Basutoland was initially voluntary.

Adapting photographs from the IWM archive that feature in the new IWM London Second World War Galleries, contemporary visual artist Joe Cruz spotlights using his energetic and bold style  some of the experiences of people from places within the former British Empire.

Each photograph reveals a different aspect of the global scale of the war and represents the work and sacrifice of people across the world that is explored in the the new Galleries.
