Joe Cruz Air limited edition print

Airmen gather around an aircraft of 257 Squadron RAF, which was funded by contributions from Burma (now Myanmar). The Squadron motto, ‘Thay myay gyee shin shwe hti’ means ‘Death or Glory’ in Burmese.

Burma produced timber, oil, minerals and rice for the war effort. Japan invaded in 1942 and Burma endured bitter fighting until 1945.

Adapting photographs from the IWM archive that feature in the new IWM London Second World War Galleries, contemporary visual artist Joe Cruz spotlights using his energetic and bold style  some of the experiences of people from places within the former British Empire.

Each photograph reveals a different aspect of the global scale of the war and represents the work and sacrifice of people across the world that is explored in the the new Galleries.
