Joe Cruz Shelter limited edition print

Civilian engineers excavate solid rock to turn an air-raid shelter into a hospital on Gibraltar, where civilians were evacuated by the British to make space for military personnel.

Gibraltar’s strongly defended harbour supported naval operations in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Gibraltar’s civilians were evacuated to French Morocco and then on to Britain, Northern Ireland, Portugal or Jamaica.

Adapting photographs from the IWM archive that feature in the new IWM London Second World War Galleries, contemporary visual artist Joe Cruz spotlights using his energetic and bold style  some of the experiences of people from places within the former British Empire.

Each photograph reveals a different aspect of the global scale of the war and represents the work and sacrifice of people across the world that is explored in the the new Galleries.
