Women in Bengal working on the construction of an airfield, five of the thousands of workers employed by Britain to build bases in India.

The Indian Army reached a strength of 2.5 million soldiers. By 1945 Britain owed India £1.3 billion for material contributions to the war.

Adapting photographs from the IWM archive that feature in the new IWM London Second World War Galleries, contemporary visual artist Joe Cruz spotlights using his energetic and bold style  some of the experiences of people from places within the former British Empire.

Each photograph reveals a different aspect of the global scale of the war and represents the work and sacrifice of people across the world that is explored in the the new Galleries.
