The Approach Limited Edition Poster (Lancaster)

On the night of 16-17 May, 1943, Wing Commander Guy Gibson, led 617 Squadron of the Royal Air Force on an audacious bombing raid to destroy three dams in the Ruhr Valley, the industrial heartland of Germany. The dams were fiercely protected, but 617 Squadron had a secret weapon: the ‘bouncing bomb.’

Imperial War Museums has partnered with Historiart to create three artworks to commemorate the 80th anniversary of one of the most daring operations undertaken by the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, Operation Chastise, or as it is more commonly known, the Dambusters Raid.

This piece, from artist Tom Ralston, focuses on 617 Squadron as they approach the Mohne dam at the beginning of the raid. Tom’s piece emphasises the precision, bravery, and fellowship of 617 squadron as they entered into what, for 53 brave crewmembers, would be their final mission.
