80 years ago on the night of 16-17 May 1943, Wing Commander Guy Gibson led 617 Squadron on a bombing raid to destroy three dams in the Ruhr valley, Germany. The dams were well defended with torpedo nets and anti-aircraft guns, but 617 Squadron had the new 'bouncing bomb'. A low-altitude bombing run could avoid much of the dam's defenses.
Imperial War Museums has partnered with Historiart to create three Lancaster Bomber artworks commemorating the 80th anniversary of Operation Chastise, also known as the Dambusters Raid. Each exclusive artwork will be available to buy for a limited time only. All the pieces are signed by the artist and hand-numbered.
