The SR-71 originated in the USA in 1959. Built with titanium as a strategic reconnaissance aircraft, put in service in 1966, its speed of Mach 3 at 80,000 foot is compatible to a 21st Century aircraft. On July 27 1976 the SR-71 set the fastest record of Mach 3.2. The 'Blackbird' was retired in the early 1990s with a glory record of 'no loss'. In 1994, at least three 'Blackbirds' resumed service due to the shortfall in the USAF reconnaissance capability.
