The Spitfire is the most famous British fighter aircraft of all time, instantly recognisable byits distinctive elliptical wing design.  Much loved by its pilots, the Spitfire saw service during the whole of the Second World War, although it will be remembered most for its part in the Battle of Britain.

The featured image shows Spitfire Mk. Is of No. 19 Squadron, Royal Air Force, based at Duxford, Cambridgeshire.  In August 1938, this unit became the first in the RAF to be equipped with the Supermarine Spitfire.  No. 19 Squadron's Gordon Sinclair, one of the first pilots to fly the aircraft, described it as 'a wonderful aeroplane.  It looked right'.
