This fragrance, one of Truefitt's oldest, dates back to around 1814. It was created during a time when England eagerly awaited news from Spain about Arthur Wellesley's military campaign in the Peninsular War. Wellington's victories against Napoleon led to the expulsion of French and allied armies from Portugal and Spain. In 1815, Wellington's military career reached its peak at the Battle of Waterloo, where a famous incident occurred. When a cannonball shattered Lord Uxbridge's leg, he exclaimed to Wellington, "I have lost my leg." Wellington calmly replied, "I believe you have." As the Duke of Wellington, known for his elegance and grooming, he was a loyal customer of Truefitt. It's possible that he carried notes of Spanish Leather with him on the battlefield of Waterloo.
