William Nicholson: The End Of War

In William Nicholson's lithograph End of War, a British soldier is depicted striking a decisive blow as he nails shut the door on war, symbolising a final closure to the conflict. The surrounding scene is marked by ruin and bloodstains, echoing the recent devastation. Nicholson, born in Newark-on-Trent, received his education at Herkomer's School in Bushey and the Académie Julian in Paris. His artistic career was diverse, encompassing painting, engraving, and notably, innovative poster designs.

Finally, William Nicholson’s ‘The End of the War’ is an image of desperate finality, the ultimate wish fulfilment. It too has a mythical tone, possibly referencing Martin Luther’s famous act of defiance against the Catholic church in 1517. Notably it is the ordinary soldier who brings this about; pools of blood signify war’s aftermath, but also the broken drum of war shows the carnival is over. This the image with only the slightest whiff of anti-war critique.
