The Supermarine Spitfires and Hawker Hurricanes were the two dominant RAF aircraft flown during the Battle of Britain. The Spitfires were faster, sleeker, and could climb higher than the Hurricanes. Although Hurricanes outnumbered Spitfires and were slower and unable to reach the same altitudes, they were more robust. While the Spitfire has since become the more famous of the two, the Hurricane played an equally important role in the air battles of 1940.
