The Lancaster became the most effective heavy bomber in the RAF during the Second World War and formed the backbone of the British bomber offensive. It was well-liked by pilots, having four powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engines and excellent handling characteristics. Specially adapted Lancasters took part in the famous Dambusters raid.
