Recruits training as line operators for the West African Corps of Signals.
Forced labour was particularly used to fill non-combatant roles, including signals units. These jobs required literate men who might not freely choose to join the armed forces.
Adapting photographs from the IWM archive that feature in the new IWM London Second World War Galleries, contemporary visual artist Joe Cruz spotlights using his energetic and bold style some of the experiences of people from places within the former British Empire.
Each photograph reveals a different aspect of the global scale of the war and represents the work and sacrifice of people across the world that is explored in the the new Galleries.
