Several of RAF Duxford’s Second World War pilots kept pet dogs as they were a popular choice for animal mascots during the war. Animal mascots were commonly seen as an uplifting symbol and companion.
As well as companions, some animals were also seen as heroes during the war due to their brave actions. Those deemed animal heroes were awarded the PDSA Dicken Medal (the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross). Of the recipients, the most common animal to be awarded were dogs.
