Eric Kennington: Making Soldiers - The Gas Mask

© Image copyright Abbott & Holder
A soldier is prominently featured in the foreground of this lithograph by Eric Kennington, as he practises putting on his gas mask. Behind him, other soldiers are being assisted with their masks. The gas masks were crucial protective equipment against chemical attacks, such as mustard gas, which was used during the First World War. The scene is set in a trench, but it doesn't emphasise the harsh, dirty conditions typically associated with such environments. Instead, it highlights the professionalism of the soldiers in the course of their duties.
