William Rothenstein: Work on the Land - Burning Couch Grass

Burning Couch-grass by William Rothenstein captures a scene of agricultural maintenance that, while commonplace, carries a particular resonance within the context of World War I. In this artwork, Rothenstein depicts farmers engaged in the task of burning couch-grass, an activity essential for clearing the fields and ensuring the health of future crops.

Unlike many of the other works in the series, which depict the mechanised and modern aspects of the war, Rothenstein’s prints focus on traditional forms of labour. The simplicity and understatement of Rothenstein's style highlight the enduring importance of agriculture during a time of immense upheaval. Living in Stroud, Gloucestershire, during this period, Rothenstein drew inspiration from the surrounding countryside.
