William Rothenstein: Work on the Land - Timber Hauling

Timber-hauling by William Rothenstein is a poignant representation of a vital wartime effort on the home front. Set within a forest, this lithograph delicately portrays a group of workers engaged in the laborious task of hauling timber. The composition focuses on the figures, strategically positioned to emphasise the physical exertion and cooperative effort required to move the heavy logs. Rothenstein's choice of a warm, monochrome palette adds a subtle, rustic quality to the scene, echoing the earthy tones of the woodland environment.

During The First World War, timber was a critical resource, necessary for everything from trench supports to military transport vehicles. The depiction of timber-hauling not only highlights the physical tasks undertaken by those on the home front but also underscores the strategic importance of such activities in supporting the war effort. Through this artwork, Rothenstein celebrates the unsung heroes of the war—those whose hard labour in the forests and fields provided essential materials and support to the British military operations.
