William Rothenstein: Work on the Land - Drilling

In Drilling by William Rothenstein, a seed drill pulled by three robust shire horses is the focus of the scene. The background subtly includes other farm activities and the hint of a rural landscape, adding layers of depth and context to the central action. This work highlights the importance of agriculture and effort on the Home Front.

Unlike many of the other works in the series, which depict the mechanised and modern aspects of the war, Rothenstein’s prints focus on traditional forms of labour. The simplicity and understatement of Rothenstein's style highlight the enduring importance of agriculture during a time of immense upheaval.
