In this dramatic lithograph by Charles Pears, titled The Place of Safety, the scene depicts a chaotic escape from a transport ship via lifeboats following a U-Boat attack. The composition shows a lifeboat in the foreground, filled with survivors rowing away from a sinking ship in the background. The sea is tumultuous, with waves crashing around the lifeboats as more survivors struggle to escape the wreckage.
The larger ship, engulfed in smoke and flames, bears witness to the dangers of maritime warfare. Despite the perilous circumstances, the survivors in the lifeboat display determination and resilience as they row towards safety. The sky above is crisscrossed with the trails of enemy aircraft, adding to the sense of urgency and threat.
