Charles Pears: Transport By Sea - Maintaining Export Trade

In this dramatic lithograph by Charles Pears, titled Maintaining Export Trade, the scene captures a dramatic naval encounter at night. The composition is dominated by a sailing ship illuminated by the searchlight of a German U-boat. The ship has been struck, with flames and smoke billowing from its deck, while the silhouette of the U-boat looms ominously in the foreground.

The contrast between the brightness of the sails and the dark shadow of the U-boat highlights the precarious situation faced by the ship. The scene symbolises the bravery and resilience of Britain's maritime past, while also showcasing the transition from traditional sailing ships to modern naval warfare.
