The Great Hammer, by George Clausen depicts a huge industrial hammer used for hammering steel. This print records work at the Royal Gun Factory, Woolwich Arsenal, which manufactured armament ammunition and explosives for the British Armed forces. The piece focuses on the imposing monolithic of the hammer in the centre back of the image. The hammer dominates the print as it likely would have in the steel mill.
Set in the context of war, where steel was a vital material for armaments and machinery, this image highlights the crucial role of steelworkers in the war effort. Their work, often perilous and always strenuous, was essential to maintaining the supply chains that fuelled the war.
The Efforts and Ideals series were made as limited edition of lithographic prints of each work commissioned by the British Government during the First World War and given to various heritage institutions to store for future sale, including Imperial War Museums. This print has been agreed to be sold to raise funds for our collections Art department and more copies have been retained in our storage.
